Awww, very sad news indeed. I used to have a crush on him when I was a little girl. Hey, Hey, We're the Monkees!

Monkees frontman Davy Jones dead at 66 from heart attack

The Monkees singer Davy Jones has died. He was 66.

The lead singer of the Daydream Believer group – which also consists of original members Micky Dolenz, 66, and 70-year-old Peter Tork – passed away from a 'massive heart attack' earlier this morning a representative confirmed.

His publicist Deborah Robicheau said he died in his sleep at his Florida home, the BBC reports.

An official from the medical examiner's office for Martin County, Florida, told the website they received a phone call from the MartinMemorialHospital informing them that Davy had died.

Davy leaves behind four daughters, Talia Elizabeth, 43, and Sarah Lee, 40 from his marriage to Linda Haines, and Jessica Lillian, 30, and 23-year-old Annabel Charlotte from his marriage to Anita Pollinger.

The pop icon – who was born in Manchester, North WestEngland – married 33-year-old TV presenter Jessica Pacheo, who he met in 2006, in August 2009.

In May 2011, the singer said he was having some of the happiest times he's ever had in his life with Jessica.

He explained: 'We have love. We have friendship. She’s also aware of what I’ve done in music, and the fact that I no longer really need to prove anything.'

Davy joined The Monkees in 1965 along with Micky, Peter and Michael Nesmith – who did not rejoin the group for their shows last year – and they went on to record a number of hit records including Daydream Believer, Last Train to Clarksville and I'm a Believer.

Last year, the pop/rock group - who were created to appear in their own TV show in the 60s - reformed for a 45th anniversary tour, but they ended up scrapping some dates amid reports of fall outs between the group.

At the time, Micky wrote on his Facebook page: 'Dear Fans and Friends, The Monkee Tour has, indeed, been cancelled but for reasons that I cannot discuss at this time. I can say that the reasons pertain to business and are internal matters.

'Needless to say, I am disappointed but the situation was unavoidable and I want to apologise to all the fans out there who will not be able to experience what was a wonderful show indeed. Regretfully, Micky (sic).'

Daydream Believer

Oh I could hide 'neath the wings of the bluebird as she sings
The six o'clock alarm would never ring
But it rings and I rise, wipe the sleep out of my eyes
My shaving razor's cold and it stings

CHORUS
Cheer up, sleepy Jean, oh what can it mean
To a daydream believer and a homecoming queen?

You once thought of me as a white knight on a steed
Now you know how happy I can be
Oh, and our good time starts and ends
With a dollar one to spend
But how much baby do we really need?

Ahh yes Dub! I remember that one well. More from drunken sing songs, belting out the chours, than from when it originally hit the charts, but a great song all the same.

I'm A Believer was another good one.  I'll see if I can upload a good Youtube clip of them. For those younger members who havn't got a clue who Davy Jones or The Monkees are. Hehe

Might take a while though.

Davy Jones was born in Leamington Street, Openshaw, Manchester, England, on 30 December 1945. At the age of 11, he began his acting career, and appeared on the British television soap opera Coronation Street as Ena Sharples's grandson, Colin Lomax[1] in 1961. He also appeared in the BBC police series Z-Cars. However, after the death of his mother from emphysema when he was 14 years old, he left acting and trained as a jockey with Basil Foster.

Oh, Wow, Andy I ddin't find that much out. Jeeez I remember Ena Sharples though, I think she had a side kick Minnie.

I found this short interview with Davy, with clips, of how he came to be a 'Monkee'.

Awww another 60s pop star gone,  The Monkees were favourites with my generation, Top Of The Pops and all that!  I remember them well, not a great age 66, shame.

Sad times...I remember the TV show replays in the 80s, on CBS or NBC, that exposed me to this group. I really liked their theme song!
