Things I knew at 40 but wished I had known at 20.

Hi all I have seen Wkd start some really good threads in the social section with the book/film and world news and I have much enjoyed the Opposite Directions run by awf200 even though some of them drive me nuts!!! I have also enjoyed the monthly caption run buy IKP. Cryptic s Challenge has been well received. Well I thought I would start one. I don’t know if it will work but lets see how it goes, It is to be called “Things I knew at 40 but wished I had known at 20”. The idea is simple if you have any little tricks you have picked up along life’s long and winding road. They don't have to be earth shattering pearls of wisdom. I was looking for little practical things that can make life a little better, I'm not looking statements i.e. put your money into Microsoft, Apple and Google shares. When I asked WKD if she would join the committee, I just gave her only the title of the thread and she took it in a slightly different direction. She stated how important education was and if she knew how important it was she would have worked harder when she was younger and she is trying to stress that to her son now. So I guess statements should be allowed but not silly ones like don't marry my first wife .Lets see were the votes take us. I am sure we can all learn from each other. I will kick it off with a few of the tricks I have learnt along the way but feel free to chip in in what ever way you want. This may only run for a month or it may run for a few months it all depends on how many ideas and thoughts we all have and how long we can string them out.

First I want to set the rules ….. I would like to run this like IKP's monthly photo caption lets just go with people using the thumbs up to vote for ideas or comments that you like. From the thumbs up votes I will draw up a final short list for the end of the month ….. I would say at the end of the month that the top 5 or 6 will be put too the committee for them to vote on. The committee will be made up of Sean, WKD, myself and Peter (pgtips) too vote on the best one. Each member of the committee will then PM there votes of their top 3 too me. 3points for their favourite 2 points for their 2nd choice, 1 point for their 3rd choice from the short list. Then all points will be added up and an overall winners declared. The best idea or comment will win a 888poker shirt, 2nd 888poker hat and 3rd a deck of cards Sean will have the merchandise shipped to the winners based upon your address on your 888poker accounts (thanks for the prizes Sean). Don't post all your ideas at once I hope this can last a few months I've got about 12 ideas up my sleeve. All members of the committee are still free to enter ideas or thoughts so still have the chance to win any of the 3 prizes its all down to how everyone votes but lets see how it goes it's just a bit of fun.

Don't forget if you like a post click on the thumbs up of that post ....your vote counts !!!

Andy

P.S. If your lucky enough to still be under 40 your still free to enter !!!! lol

How Defrost your car on winters morning (A winter warmer).

I learnt this one from my old work mates at Shell when I worked 12hr shifts

On a cold frosty morning when both front and back screens are covered in frost before leaving the house run the hot tap at your sink until the water starts warming up. Now 2/3 rds fill a plastic bag (the sort you may buy a lettuce or tomatoes in from a supermarket) with hot water ensuring there are no leaks in the bag. Now leave the house ensuring the front door is locked. Start the car and ensure the car heater is set to full and is set to defrost and that the air circulation is recycle air from within the car it warms up much quicker that way. Now use your bag of hot water to defrost the front windscreen. Start at the top of the windscreen so that any warm melt water will run down the screen and further melt the frost below ensure you do not catch the bag on the windscreen wipers. Then repeat the process on the back windscreen starting at the top again. The bag of water should still be warm after doing both front and back and now be used for clearing the side windows and mirrors. When complete, empty the bag of water into the gutter so as not to form a slip hazard on road or pavement. The advantage of using the bag of water is that the water will be between 50 to 70'C and has less chance of giving a thermal shock to the windscreen that you may get from using a kettle of boiling water 100'C which has a hi chance of shocking the screen. You are also not adding extra extra water to a frozen situation which can often refreeze. You also don't have to return the kettle to the house giving less chance of thieves of stealing your car while you return the kettle to the house. 1 bag of hot water will do all your windows and mirrors were as a kettle of boiling water often only does the front windscreen and half the back windscreen. Final cost saving is it much cheaper for your boiler to heat the water to 50 to 70'C than it is to boil a kettle.

Trust me it works …. every time I have moved house and have been seen using this technique with in a few weeks the whole street have copied me.

Things I knew at 40 but wished I had known at 20.

When you go on your main summer holidays, the day before you go, take an ice tray and fill it with milk and then place it in the freezer. That way when you come back you will have 12 ice cubes of milk so even if you get delayed or the shops are closed on your return you will have enough fresh milk for 12 cups of tea or coffee! I also pop a few slices of bread in the freezer too so you can get a few rounds of toast as well.!! enough to keep Ken (lambone) going!

wow agree i find that the frozen bread in toaster is very fresh when toasted frozen
as well as keeping whole loaf in freezer as it thaws in minutes and it freshens it up !!

quite often making my sandwichs outta frozen bread  even in esky thawed by smoko

oh neally forgot
1st job in the darkness was to put oven on 200c

when going to a new area
start at the index for the said area FIRST in your street directory
as the modern street directories are a GEM of information  even going as far as churchs and parks boat ramps etc etc

I wish I had known that unprotected sex could cause HIV, was damned lucky I didnt get it.
My parents were very strict and I was a little rebell, to be an adult, did not mean anything
to mom and dad as long as I lived in their house. Mom married as a virgin with 31 and
always told me men are pigs.  Ok I did not believe in that and had much fun with those
"pigs" Laughing.  You maybe would say a bit too much fun, but can there be too much fun?
And I thought if my parents so aware that I dont have that kind of fun that must be
something very interesting and I loved to work out what I like and what not.  So I
lived very risky without knowing the danger. I got not even one of the other nasty
diseases, which you get from unprotected sex.  I had a very good time and glad I
did not have to pay for it after.

I'm Not quite 40, but another year closer, i will try and come up with someone of my own, but in the mean time.....

I work with alot of electricians, who have had a lot of apprentices, and here are some of things those apprentices now know, but didn't at 20.

  1. There is no such thing as Tartan paint
  2. 240v hurts more than a pin prick (well at least before your fingers have calloused over)
  3. You can not buy a left handed screwdriver
  4. Just because you got overtime (same as eveyone else) does not make it your round
  5. Never drop your oppo in the Sh!t
  6. They only treat you that way because somebody treated them that way

If I remeber anymore I will post em up
