This is a post I have tried to make several times over the last two weeks and simply not been able to, even now it is very difficult.
On Saturday 14th July the news came that my younger brother had died that afternoon, while out climbing near his home on the Isle of Mull.
While there were issues lowering him from the face that led to physical injuries, we believe he was already unconscious due to an undiagnosed heart condition, the thing we will probably never know is whether he might have survived had he not been climbing and first aid been more readily available. One thing we can be sure of is the guy he was with did everything humanly possible under the circumstances, but it was 25 minutes before he could get him down and get to him, and the best part of an hour before a helicopter could winch him from the gully where they began the ascent.
The funeral was on the Friday just gone at the crematorium in Paisley (the nearest one to the Isle of Mull).
My brother was a follower of the Tibetan Buddhist faith and 'Natural Great Peace' is a teaching by Sogyal Rinpoche - a renowned Lama and author of 'The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying' the book that first introduced Steve to these beliefs - and was played as the committal prayer, do a search if you are interested in hearing it.
Steve was only 39 and leaves behind a loving wife and two young children, a boy of eight and a girl of two and a half, that is the hardest part of it all to accept.
Steve and I did not always see eye-to-eye, in fact there have been times when there was outright hostility between us, but there are very few constants in my life and he was one of them, now he is gone.

This must have been very difficult for you to write Rich. You've written about your brother with an honest account and I know you must be struggling a lot with whats happened. The utmost respect goes out to you for writing this post. My heart goes out to you Rich.

Oh Pande!  Those that you fight fiercely with sometimes (because you can) are the ones you love most and will miss deeply, even if you never thought you would. I have read 'The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying', he would have known that.
