I am pretty much retired now. I will be 60 in December and hopefully have a good few years ahead of me yet.

I have only worked weekends for the last 12 months or so and find myself struggling with my free time other than spending hour after hour on the PC. I have no hobbies as such and a very low concentration level. Reading is out of the question as I retain very little of what I read and writing is also difficult for the same sort of reason.
Horse racing fills a lot of my days but I would like to try to break that habit a little. I try to get engrossed in role playing games on various games consoles but find I hit my boredom threshold quite quickly and finish other types of games within a couple of days.
Gardening is a no-no as I have never liked it and most things I plant just die away, I have some muscle problems that prevent long walks, running or vigorous exercise although  Xbox Kinect sports games are good for short spells of exercise and entertainment.

I know that most of you here are much younger but have you planned for your retirement?
Do have any ideas about how you will fill your time when you do retire?

As we are living longer retirement is going to be a big part of your lives, I have friends in the Netherlands who have been on pension longer that they worked Smile

As a person who has never planned ahead I strongly suggest you give serious thought to what you will do when you retire. Not financially although that is also important but more what you will do with your time when retirement arrives.

Luckily I planned the finance part.

If you already  have plans what are they?

Hi Chris,

Congratulations on your decision to retire, I did the same 4 years ago when I hit 60, and I have loved the time since, no plans, but I made sure I kept in contact with my mates and I swim twice a week with them and an over 50 group, it is good but gentle exercise and quite sociable, with tea and a gossip afterwards. As a wife/mother/grandma/greatgrandma I still have everyday domestic jobs to carry out, and I love to bake and I do some crochet, I usually enter a few bits in the twice yearly Flower Show, I read a bit, watch a film now and then and play a lot of poker! So my time gets filled quite happily.

Now my old man has recently retired at 65 and like you he had few if any hobbies other than the internet, but as a retirement present he chose a D SLR camera, and is now going 1 morning a week to adult education classes to learn about photography, which will hopefully become a hobby. He also plays Petanq, which is basically a load of Boules!! 1 afternoon a week, at our local Sports club, again it is a gentle exercise with a social side.  He pops off to Brands Hatch now and then to spectate if an event takes his fancy, such as truck racing,  bike racing, or saloon car racing.

But our main goal for retirement is to sell up and move to the coast, (a cheaper area) and buy a flat (less maintainence) to free up some equity to purchase a Motor Home, and do some travelling around Britain and Europe at our own pace and without the hassle of airports and air travel, which I find tedious these days.

On Saturday we had tea on a steam train, and today we had breakfast at a garden centre (Special offer  lol) and tonight we are going out for dinner for our 42nd wedding anniversary,  Surprised, and we are going away Friday to Monday with our son and youngest grand daughter.

There are also plenty of organisations who need volunteers if you feel so inclined, your local Day Centre may well welcome someone who can give advice to  Silver Surfers on computer/internet use.

I think you will soon find plenty of activities to fill your time and you won't regret retiring, it just takes a bit of adjustment to realise this is for ever and not just a holiday period.

So good luck in finding the things that are right for you, we always welcome your input, advice, and games on here too, all the best for retirement.

Congratulations on your early retirement Chris and reaching the big 60 ( which I will reaching 6 months after you noooo ). I'm sure that you'll soon find plenty to do and keep yourself occupied. Luckily enough I can still go for long walks, jogging and bike rides etc and I try to spent as much time with my grandchildren as I can so theres not enough hours in the day for me at the moment.
Maybe look at doing some short college courses and learn some new tricks as they say. I did two years at college recently and surprised myself at how wellI I did even though I was very nervous at first.
With Gary (Goblin ) also turning 60 next year maybe we'll have to start an old timers club eh Chris.Laughing
Good luck with whatever you decide to do m8.

Happy anniversary by the way Jeanie.

chris you should start swimming at your local swimming pool, all pools these days do an adult swim, and judging by the amount of old ladies plodding up and down my local pool a gentleman of your age would be quite a catch Wink

Congratulations on your retirement Chris.  You lucky fella. Smile

I'm a way off collecting my pension and the way the goal posts are being moved others will have a lot longer to reach it so you are right they need to prepare for that.

I did however have a bit of a life style change in the last few years to free up more time which I benefited from greatly.  I am still very very busy but make more time to fit in fun things that I enjoy.  I still don't have enough time to do the things I would like so am quite surprised when you say it is difficult to fill your time.

I think Jeanie and Dub have it well sussed...good on ya.  Congrats on your wedding anniversary too Jeanie (bit late in reading this thread soz).

I would suggest for your health Chris that you increase your exercise as it seems all that you do is sedentary.  You could take up some form of dancing as we have seen you bust a few good moves on here recently WinkLaughing  you could give this fella a run for his money:
