Well it's official! I am back

Yes after almost 18 months of just an occasional game I am back playing, but there's plenty of time to disscuss that later, to start with let's see where I am and how I got here

If you read previous blogs from me you will know very well the struggles I faced, I feel I have turned the corner now and feel better within and about myself, it's been a long road and there have been some dark times, 9 funerals in 2 years, the suicide of a good friend and a mild heart attack will get you thinking about how lucky you are to be here, and it was the kick up the **** I needed to be honest

My health is as good as can be expected for a man of 80 (shame I'm only 52) but I have a lot of niggly injuries that have seen me work very little in the last 2 years, and said HA had me out for 8 months, I'm just doing agency work for now as I can chose to take time out to recover when needed, but at some point I have to go back full time, the savings are gone, golf has gone and to be honest until I'm working full time life has gone, will 2016 be my year? I have no idea! but only I can make it mine so there's a goal for me

I'm also back on the forum, not as much as I was but it's a start, I don't know if I'll ever be as active as I was because the place is like a ghost town at times, and I can't be bothered to waste my time on bad beat threads from people who wouldn't know a bad beat if it jumped up and slapped them in the face, or people just looking for freebies, but I might offer to give some time to help 1 or 2 people with their game soon, and I'll be posting strategy/mindset threads as well

On the poker side of things wiggy will continue to be the test/casino account you all know me by, but I have a goal of increasing my ROI on Lucky Ace by 50% and the same on PS, wheather that's possible or not only time will tell, most of my play now is going to be cash tables and sng's, ridiculous amounts of late registration mean tournaments are not an option, forum games don't do it for me now either! they aren't forum games anyway! just an extension of the main site for those prepared to look into how to join them, and that's a shame as these used to be a good meeting point for the members, but hey-ho, life is what life is, poker is what poker is and the forum is what the forum is

I'm also intending to get out and play live more, I'm not sure what this game is online but it's certainly not poker (but that's a rant for another day) with London on my doorstep there's no reason not to play live except laziness, and apparently I've done lazy well in the past so it's time for that to change

Is life on the up? it is if I make it
Happy new year all, may 2016 bring you good health and happiness

Good to see you're getting your mojo back Wiggy. Like you I have become slightly disillusioned with some of the games on here, especially the DoN omaha games which have now turned into a farce with only 500 starting chips.
For me poker is a pastime, something to enjoy but it seems to be getting harder to do that online. I also am looking to play some more live tournaments but it's slightly more difficult with the nearest casino being over 2hrs drive away.I'm hoping to go to DtD some time in this coming year and another tournament in Leeds (unfortunately niether of these are being promoted by 888) I wish you luck for the coming year and hope sometime to meet you at a live game.
Best wishes Jon. OMAHAcerts

Good luck to you Wiggy, and that is precisely why I don't bother with most of the tournaments on here. Some of the "forum" members aren't what construes as a forum member either. I had an email from a forum member who asked me to lend them 5 dollars so that they could play a chipmass game.  Being the season of Goodwill I gave the member the 5 dollars and said have it on me,  happy new year.  No thank you no confirmation that he had received the funds! So lesson learnt, even reg forum members don't really care either about the community spirit, or even the community.  They just Blog for the monthly Blog comp, play the occasional community game, but aren't really interested in advancing 888's profile.  This year I am going to attempt a live game somewhere, that's one of my many resolutions.   MY rant over!  Have a very Happy New Year, and I hope this year brings you peace,  happiness and of course prosperity

I am so pleased to see you back Wiggy, what ever happened to that "Flaming Sword" and hope your health continues to improve. Sounds like you have had some battles in your life. But you are back and that is great, so good luck and I am looking forward to picking up some useful tips and advice from you.

Post 2

Not much poker played over the last 2 days, and to be honest what was played was pretty poor on my behalf, but I often find that when coming off of a break! it's strange really because I was really looking forward to a poker session but got distracted by an e-mail from horseracebase, once I knew I wasn't going to concentrate I made the decision to do some racing research

Horse racing is my bread and butter, it supplements my low income and allows me to have some financial peace of mind, in 2014 I made 9k profit and in 2015 I increased this to 12.5k, pretty impressive until you realise I have earned less than 16k working in the last 2 years, until I am back working full time my betting bank is static and I need to be withdrawing those profits, long term I want to get back to full time working to give myself the chance to give up work and make my living from horse racing and other betting

Now doesn't that sound strange? "I want to get back to work to give up work" but the truth is there are no short-cuts, to make a reasonable amount of money you need to start with a reasonable amount of money, and when your goal is to do any form of gambling for a living you need a reasonable amount of money behind you to cover the times you do not make enough in a month to support yourself, wheather it's poker or horseracing if you ignore that fact you set yourself up for faliure, because believe me there are long losing periods whichever you do

I started on this road 4 years ago, I have read everything I can about form reading, odds creation, breeding, big race trends and how to see them, ratings, power ratings, track biases, horse shape and definition, betting strategies, and much much more, and now it's starting to pay off, last year I had 3 losing months (one of them quite brutal) but over the course of 12 months I averaged a return of £1000 per month from a small bank and no fall back position, now with a bigger bank and enough to cover the losing months behind me can I make a living? my goal is to find out

And that was the reason I was distracted by an e-mail when I was intending to play poker, I read something that got me thinking, so much so that I had all sorts of ideas buzzing around, and when that happens I have to act on it, and 2 days of intense research later I have several new ideas to work with for the next 3 months of the racing calendar, I'll give an example of the sort of research I get into

Trainer- Richard Fahey
Track- Wolverhampton
Race Class- Class 5
Horses- 3 year old to 5 year olds
Race type- Handicaps
Time of year- January to March inclusive

Now if we look at the above criteria only! for the last 2 years we get results of 70 runners, 20 winners, strike rate 28.5%, and a level stakes profit of over 46 points

The above is what is called a micro system and as you can see over a 3 month period it has averaged 23 points a year, depending on your starting bank a point could be anything from £1 up to whatever, so at £10 a point it's £230, at £100 a point it's £2300, now imagine a portfolio of dozens of these micro systems covering all 12 months of the year and you can see how much time I dedicate to my goal

And here's the mindset part of the post

Looking at the results you can see straight away that there are 50 losing bets from 70, losing runs happen, it's true in sports betting and poker, those who are successful accept this and ride out the losing runs knowing the profits will come, those who can't accept this go broke chasing losses, I know which side of the fence I prefer to be on

Thanks Jeanie

I found I couldn't stay away, I missed you guys too much

I'm not sure exactly where this journal is going to go, and maybe that's a good thing? but one thing is for sure this really is my own personal soap box, so that should make things interesting

I like horse racing but have never realy got in to it but still have the odd bet now and then, i admire your dedication. I have an old friend of mine who spends many hours going over form etc and he had the perfect job as he went on to work at the Racing Post and when he was lodging at mine he gave me many a good tip. I do remember he went on a bad run and was criticised by some of my other mates as they didnt understand how betting works and always wanted winners. Its a shame now as he hardly tells us of his tips now as he couldnt stand the whingeing from others if the horse lost. I know i had a good run as out of 15 horses i had 11 winners.
Anyhow good luck in your horses and poker.
By the way hows your luck on the football? I am prob just about break even for the year on my football bets.

The premier league has been killing me m8, I'm about 10 points down at this stage of the season thanks to the lower leagues and the Bundesliga going well, so I've been looking for an angle just using those games with different bet types

I'm going to restart the trial in the sports section once the FA Cup weekend is out of the way, the goal now has to be working towards making some sort of recovery and pushing on towards next season, so it would seem to make sense to work on a multiples strategy alongside the singles for now

I might put up a dedicated thread in sports where I share some of my horseracing selections at some point, my issue with that is the freeloaders and is the main reason I don't post selections now, that and the fact goblin is banned and boro has given up

I fired up 6x 5c-10c tables on another site last night and after 2.5 hours walked away with just over 5 buy-ins

Not too shabby when you consider I busted 2 buy-ins in the first hour, I felt I was playing well! but I could feel the concentration slipping towards the end and decided to get out ahead, I think it's going to take some time for me to ever get back to fully concentrated as online poker just bores me after a while

Maybe it has something to do with people just calling anything, or playing minimum buy-ins all in every hand and leaving when they hit, you know you can't make your losses back against these people, so when they turn up I start to lose interest, the strange thing is it used to be the Russians and Germans doing the short stack all in, now it seems it's predominantly the Brits, it's nice to see the Chinese are just as aggressive online as they are live, it makes them so easy to trap

I think tonight I may fire up the wiggy account and practice some short stack aggressive strategy, never hurts to have many strings to the bow, not played on Lucky Ace so far as I'm bonus clearing elsewhere, and it's back to work for 3 days from tomorrow so I'll have to see if I play any real poker before the weekend, or just practice the shortstacking for the rest of the week

I'm struggling to get into the poker groove, I fired up the site yesterday and then just sat there wondering why, after about 20 minutes I closed it down again and did some reccord keeping

Went back to work yesterday so maybe I was just tired, but it gave me an excuse to fire up my favourite girl and take her for a spin, I have an immaculate classic Ducatti 916, limited edition road race set up which I treated myself to after a good month on the horses, it costs me more to garage it than it does to use it, but my little 125 commuter bike was in the shop being serviced so I had to take it out in the cold (I did appologise)

I could well end up killing myself, but we have an agreement "if we're going we're going together" no half measures, I think it tops out at just over 200 but I haven't had it over 160 at the moment, so time to hit the Autobahns this summer, well if I decide I'm brave enough

Working again today and I'll fire up one of the sites tonight, still not played Lucky Ace yet and only had one real session on stars, and it's the 7th of January already, maybe this wont be the year I ramp up my playing
