As soon as GLEN HODDLE said (within the 1st minute) that we should start well & aggressively (or something to that effect) i had a bad feeling!

Slovakia are a decent side...and they showed this getting that early goal (and they have form & have beaten good sides before)

By the 10th minute Glen said something like "Well let's HOPE we can catch them on the COUNTER-ATTACK" Smile yeah couldn't help but smile at this point! WHAT a CHANGE (within just 10 minutes)

No question their goal was a BAD MISTAKE by RASHFORD...but to his CREDIT this kid has got BALLS (at his feet Wink) he took it on the chin & tried to his best to recovery & HE DID SO with a BEAUTY of a GOAL!

I LOVE Deli ALLI as a FOOTBALLER but the hand gesture was SILLY & STUPID (he'll learn hopefully?)
KANE is a GREAT DANGER....reminds me of LINEKER but with even more of a THREAT!

I have to say that we should have recovered this situation (0-1 down) far earlier than we did had not some of the players been so damn GREEDY (BLANKS) namely ALLI (again he needs to learn), OXO & STERLING who all tried to take on the whole SLOVAKIAN defence & who after GREAT RUNS tried to finish it themselves, instead of putting people IN who were in a BETTER POSITION to SCORE than THEM!

IT's A TEAM GAME FELLA'S...i love great individual GOALS but come on!

After the match i sat with my sister & we both agreed we deserved the win (although you would not have said so after about 25 minutes of the match)
We again looked SCARED early on but thanfully that FEAR fell away.

It wasn't a GREAT GAME or PERFORMANCE...We did what we needed to do (i was more pleased for SCOTLAND...they have a GREAT CHANCE NOW)

We both agreed that this was about PAR for the COURSE...no NATIONAL TEAM really plays with the EXCITEMENT & ATTACKING Mentalilty that we used to see back in the day (PELE's BRAZIL, ZICO's BRAZIL even our very own ENGLAND TEAM from 1966 upto perhaps the 1996 when during this HOME EURO's with SHEARER & SHERINGHAM we saw the last half decent ENGLAND SIDE)

The golden generation arrived (BECKHAM & Co) & did NOTHING of NOTE Cry and we are still waiting!

Same could be said (more or less) OF ALL the NATIONAL TEAMS around the WORLD with perhaps the exception of ONE which ALWAYS seem to be a REAL THREAT & DANGER did you guess 'em? yup GERMANY! how do they do it?

We should qualify now but these PREMIERSHIP Players are NOT the BE ALL & END ALL, they are PAID UNBELIEVABLE amounts & are ADORED but do very little for it...WE SHOULD BE EXPECTING MORE from them i think?

I LOVE HARRY KANE & he could well end up being an ENGLAND WORLD CUP WINNING LEGEND (i'm ever the optimist) but i wasn't too fond of his comments regarding the fans!

The MALTA performance was lacking, this was a bit better, we did what we need to do & we may well be one of the favourites next year but wouldn't it be NICE if we could become the ONE NATION that takes things by the scruff of the neck & ATTACKS with PURPOSE (they'll need to LEARN to pass it to someone in a better position than them first though)

I AM liking the look of our DEFENCE now, seems fairly solid, JONES & CAHILL central? YUP GOOD.

If PORTUGAL playing the FOOTBALL they did at the EURO's can win such a thing then ENGLAND with a TEAM that i would say is (on paper) BETTER should have a chance of winning the WORLD CUP next year...BUT i think many of us say this every 2-4 years! ARGHHH.

As you know I am not really a football fan but I do occasionally pop England matches on if there is nothing else to watch. I was flicking through last night and saw the game was just underway and thought to myself "I bet we are 1 down already" clicked the button and hey presto lol.  I shoulda had a bet.

I watched like 3 minutes of England being dominated before I got bored but glad we made a comeback. Smile

Not a lot of hope for me liking football really, born in Bristol and English so 3 crappy teams most of my life lol

3 Teams in Bristol Chris (it's Chris isn't it? my memory isn't so good) City, Rovers & who am i missing?
Yeah you should have made that bet, i actually didn't make this bet on my accumulator because it had trouble written all over it, thought of adding England as a win but then figured it might end up a draw (at 0-1 early on looked the right choice but to England's credit they BATTLED well)
Unlike you i am FOOTBALL MAD but it's from an ERA when it was all about the game & trying to play good ATTACKING FOOTBALL (the 1970's when i was a kid & the 1980's as a teenager)

MANCHESTER CITY was & is MY TEAM and they have ALWAYS tried to PLAY FOOTBALL the right way (even if at times it didn't work out) so you can imagine how GREATFUL i am now to have such a WONDERFUL TEAM (DREAMS can COME TRUE...NEVER STOP DREAMING!)
City in the then old DIVISION 2 (3rd Tier football for the first time ever) & who comes to our rescue in the PLAY-OFF's but Paul (Friggin we owe him a LOT) Dickov.
Ok, we ain't started too GREAT this season (but it's early doors) on PAPER we should be there or thereabouts.

As for ENGLAND...surely one day we'll get it right or at the very least have a GREAT Tournament in which we unluckly GO OUT having played the better game but losing on PENALTIES (to GERMANY) i never thought i'd MISS those days but i kinda do now Laughing

I wish we were as fortunate as England Paul.  The performance in Qualifying may not be world beating but barring a catastrophe they are going to Russia.  Ireland on the other hand now need a miracle.  Your analysis of England though is spot on and RTE should offer you Dunphys spot on the punditry panel and pay you the same wage.  Getting tired of him blaming management and he thinks Ireland should be playing like Barca.  We should go back to the days that Charlton gave us.  He had it right with the style Ireland should be playing. "Put em under pressure".

Hopefully Scotland make it and unfortunately now its either Ireland or wales and not both and well done Northern Ireland.   Outstanding achievement for a country with as small a player pool to pick from.  Its all the more remarkable given they are not just scraping through but cruising.

Just City and Rovers m8, I was a Rovers fan as a kid as my dad knew Ray Mabbut (spelling) and they even got me a trial but I sprained my ankle 15 minutes in so was never thought of again lol

John, hang on in there mate, it's not over yet.

I'm a supporter of BOTH the Republic of Ireland & Northern Ireland (as both sides of my family are originally from here, my fathers side the North, my mothers the south) we even display the REPUBLIC Flag during World Cup's & Euro's (when they make it!)
So i feel for ya & i think there is a TWIST in the TALE here & i fancy the Republic to grab that 2nd place PLAY-OFF spot?

I regularly went to WALES on holiday & day trips during the 70's & 80's when i was a kid / teen so i support them too & as for SCOTLAND?

I'd never visted Scotland until i reached my early 30's & it's a JOY, incredible places, SALT of the EARTH (down to Earth & helpful) PEOPLE...i've been back virtually every other year since!

And of course i'm ENGLISH but they've been frustrating we fans since that last chance at winning something at EURO 96 (if only Gazza had slightly larger FEET...Arghhh Laughing) maybe we'll find that magic formula by next year?

Your SPOT ON about Northern Ireland...to me this is a better achievement than that of ENGLAND, let's just hope they win the PLAY OFF (2 Tourny's in a ROW after years of nothing? fingers crossed)

CRYPTIC...you got me! Laughing got ya...that 3rd team is our NATIONAL TEAM.
Well i don't think they are as a bad as that, at least we still quailfy for these Tourny's but we do VERY LITTLE when we get there! & i still think SOUTHGATE is wrong about HART in Goal.
Ah the stories we tell...that's an unfortunate one & sad one though, who knows what might have happened had that injury to you not happened.
I too got a trial but not at a well known professional club like Bristol Rovers? IMPRESSIVE! but for the so called best players from the Tameside Schools Area (i was picked for the trial because my coach nominated me for scoring the goals for the school...i didn't even get your 15 minutes! got about 10 & no one got the ball to me! ZERO / ZIP CHANCES & that was my chance GONE!) still we can moan about the current crop now SmileCry at how much they're getting for doing very little!

SHOCKED that Argentina are struggling to make the WORLD CUP next year & might? need a play off perhaps against New Zealand?
Although i don't think we (ENGLAND) are doing to well, we're getting the job done & i think THIS TIME? PLEASE! we will be more competitive!
I'd do a KEEGAN (i love that fella) KEVIN KEEGAN was one of my footballing HEROES as a young kid (along with DENNIS TUEART at CITY) and he didn't care too much for DEFENDING, he figured WE WANTED ENTERTAINMENT? and he wasn't wrong!
Just so long as we got more goals than the other side...i think ENGLAND should ADOPT a FAST ATTACKING GAME.

It's the reason MANY of US loved the GAME...free flowing ATTACKING FOOTBALL in the 1970's & 80's seemed common place & who didn't MARVEL at watching those BRAZILIAN TEAMS from that ERA? why can't we become THE TEAM to do this again?
In reality i would settle for a good run in RUSSIA perhaps to the SEMI-FINALS? but if you get that FAR why not go on & win it! you'll probably NEVER get another chance!

Back to normal footie this weekend Cool

Im looking forward to the weekends action in particular the Pool v City game.  In recent years these two have provided some real top class viewing and hopefully this one will be no different.

Hopefully Argentina  make it to the world cup as I have always loved watching them play tournament football but never quite get there and it would be nice to see Messi complete his career.  I dont think there will be another player like him for a very long time.

CITY 5 LIVERPOOL 0 Smile

I thought & hoped we would win but 5-0 was unexpected (i'd predicted a 3-1 City win)

Sending off HELPED (no question) & MANE is a very good player.
Frankly it's about time we got a GOOD result vs the POOL (whom i like a lot! GREAT HISTORY, GREAT MANAGERS & PLAYERS down the years)
As a CITY fan i have to say watching Steven Gerrard pull LIVERPOOL up by their boot straps 0-3 down at Half Time in that EUROPEAN CUP, it was one of THE BEST COME BACK's OF ALL-TIME.

Yeah GREAT Win this...you mentioned MESSI & i agree with you, he retired (briefly) came back & i too would like to see him in Russia.

This kind of player you don't think you'll see again in a very long time?
Well, i've been banging on about him since i saw him play for BRAZIL & then couldn't believe we signed him instead of Barcelona, Real or Bayern & i think he has everything needed to challenge Messi...i speak of Gabriel JESUS of course! a quiet start but 2 goals today & the Man of the Match Award...KEEGAN like!

CITY FANS & Football Fans in general i think are going to LOVE watching this little fella.

Good win 2 day Paul.  As a neutral fan(UTD fan) I just hoping for a good watch but the red card did ruin the game.  Hope the Goalkeeper is ok.  Gabriel Jesus is a star in the making but I do think that Aguero has earned his chance to play in that team even if Guardiola dislikes him.  Even as a Utd fan I do think City will be too strong if they keep Kompany fit.  Next year we will be better placed to take ye on.

Just goes to show a City fan & United fan can agree Smile
Yes clearly delighted by this win, sending off helped (didn't ruin the game for me Wink ) let's also not forgot Liverpool were without COUTINHO (another excellent player...feel sorry for him that he didn't get his dream move) with him & MANE on the pitch they are a THREAT for anyone.

GK ok, looked worse than it was but MANE clearly connected with him, bit unlucky MANE (and now he gets a 3 game ban!!! NO COMMON SENSE sometimes...no way did he mean it)

YOU ARE SPOT ON over AGUERO...we fans were excited about Guardy's appointment (although i think many of us knew it wouldn't be as easy for him as in SPAIN or GERMANY & i think we & he saw this last year) it's good to see Guardy is starting him again alongside JESUS.
Makes sense to many of us...these two are a HUGE THREAT & yes for all that SERGIO has done for this CLUB & still one of the BEST STRIKERS around how come he never started more last season, thankfully looks like Pep has come to his senses & figured it out.
Not sure he dislikes him John it's more he felt he did not contribute more to the team (but i'm with you, Lineaker & Shearer...your job up there is to GET GOALS...he does that) but i think as seen yesterday that he's taken Guardy's thoughts on board & handed JESUS his 2nd goal on a plate.

As for UNITED you must be disappointed by that result at STOKE? but fair do's to Stoke.
I think you'll go close (i just hope not close enough Innocent)  as the guys on MOTD pointed out MENDY on one side WALKER on the other along with the midfield line up we have & those two up front yeah i'll side with you in making CITY favourites this season.
